Healthy Snacking

One good way to keep your dog’s weight under control is to feed her low calorie healthy snacks.     This should be part of any long-term weight reduction and maintenance program.
As humans continue to become over weight, so do their dogs. It is estimated that between 40-50%     of dogs in the United States are over weight. Dogs that are carrying excess weight have a greater chance of a reduced lifespan and a lower quality of life.
There are numerous illnesses that may occur as a result of your dog being over-weight. In addition, owners of unhealthy dogs will spend more on their pet’s healthcare. Illnesses that can result from being over weight include:
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Joint pain
  • Decreased liver function
  • High blood pressure
  • Lower energy levels and endurance
Many commercially prepared treats and snacks are high in calories and provide little or no           nutritional value. The list below is a guide to choosing snacks that are healthy, support weight management and can also be used during training sessions as rewards for your dog’s good behavior.
If you are uncertain as to what snacks and treats to feed your dog, or if your pet has special needs, be sure to check with your veterinarian.
